As a mum of three, I am very aware of how hard it is for mums (dads, and other carers) to find time to work out! I have been teaching Mums & Bubs classes for several years now and these classes hold a special place in my heart. When you are sleep deprived, learning a million new things at once and (most importantly) getting to know the newest member of your family, it can be a real strain to find time for yourself and to help your body find the strength and balance needed to be a healthy and happy parent. Even just a small workout can make a big difference to our wellbeing and make the parenting journey easier, and that is where Happy Body Pilates comes in. We can be flexible to suit the changing needs of you and your baby.
I teach one on one (plus babies/toddlers) classes here in my Watsonia studio. Because I have the luxury of teaching one on one, I am able to tailor every session to suit you and your baby. I know that some days your baby will be happy to hang out and relax, and other times ... not so much! On those days we are able to change your repertoire to moves that allow your baby to snuggle up to you and feel safe. You are also welcome to breastfeed or take cuddle breaks as needed, and I am always happy to carry babies around the studio as well (I love that part). I have a range of little ones visiting the studio across the week - from 6 weeks to 2 years old, and we always manage to make our sessions work for both mother and child. Toys are available for older children as well. I aim to work on a "whatever it takes to help you fill your cup" basis, knowing just how important this is for all mums, no matter how old your children are.
Pre and post natal bodies are special bodies and they need special care. Whether you are expecting, or you have had your post partum clearance from your doctor, we can create a workout program to suit you, your body and your baby. Every body is different, and every pregnancy is different, so it is really important to look at your individual needs: from preparing for birth and counteracting those pregnancy aches and pains; to building up the bodies that bounce back quickly; and returning functional movement to those who need rehab and repair. My first pregnancy was very easy and I bounced back quickly, however my second pregnancy was a twin pregnancy, and I ended up with a 4cm abdominal separation. It has taken time and patience to repair, but I am so glad that I had Pilates to help me rehab in a safe and effective way. Even just the postural changes we experience through breastfeeding, carrying babies (have you noticed you tend to favour one side over the other?), and picking up little ones from their cots can take a toll, and this is something we work to balance in every session. There is a real sense of empowerment in finding you are able to trust your body to do what's needed in your daily life (and beyond if you like a challenge), and I find that Pilates is an excellent way to achieve this empowerment.
Having been a new mum trying to return to exercise myself, I know that babies and children can often divert even the best laid plans. If you are one of my clients you never have to stress about late cancelling or missing class - just let me know you are okay, and we can reschedule or change delivery as needed. Sometimes you may prefer to stay home and do your session on FaceTime or Zoom, and if that's what works, we will go with it. If it's just one of those days and you can't make your class - there are no charges. My goal is to make your life easier, without any added pressure.
"I started with Leith at Happy Bodies Pilates when I was pregnant with my third baby. Leith tailored every session depending on how I was feeling. Her knowledge about the body and what was happening to me as the bubba grew was astounding. I never once had to worry about the safety of what I was doing.
Leith’s postpartum support was next level. She checked in and made sure I was keeping well and making time for myself, even if it was just a little reminder to stretch and breathe. Once I was all clear to return to Pilates, she gently guided me through reconnecting my abdominals, strengthening my pelvic floor and transforming my core. Again every session was tailored specifically to cater for how I was feeling and what I needed at the time. I can safely say, 12 months since giving birth, my pelvic floor muscles, abs and core are stronger than they have ever been! I have learnt so much and 100% attribute my postpartum recovery to my regular pilates sessions. Come to think of it…. I have recovered better this time than my first two pregnancies!
As for attending my sessions with a 1 year old in tow, Leith is super accommodating and flexible with what you need. I have taken my daughter in the capsule, the pram, on the mat with me or happily in Leith’s arms. She just switches the routine around to suit what we need on the day. As a mum of three herself, Leith understands the importance of mums doing something for themselves but also gets how hard that can be some days. I couldn’t recommend her highly enough and am so thankful for all that she has given me in the last 18 months.
Thank you Leith for all of your support, guidance, strength and love."
"I went to my physio in despair, it was 3 months after having my baby and I was still having trouble with my balance and I was stiff and hurting all over. She said "you need to do Pilates twice a week". I was lucky to find Leith - with quality, local, affordable AND child-friendly classes. Leith has guided me back to balance, strength and flexibility. I recommend her highly."
